10 team NL only 5x5 with 280 cap.

I would like opinions on extension of the following players who are in option years:

Pujols $41
Josh Johnson $6
Ludwick $2

Extensions increase contract by $5 per year.

I generally favor extensions and usually field a contending and often a winnning team. I see myself as a contender given my core. I generally favor extensions, but I have some concern with my usual approach as I will have less money available at the draft due to the decision to keep both Utley and Pujols. Historically we run at about 35% inflation, but we are now shrinking to 10 teams given the loss of an owner.

FWIW, my keeper list:

1. Pujols $41F
2. Josh Johnson $6F
3. Pence $15B
4. Hansen $3B
5. Ludwick $2F
6. Alcides Escobar $5B
7. B. Wilson $19B
8. Soto $7F*
9. Blanton $3B
10. Utley $40B
11. Kawakami $1B
12. M. Adams $1B
13. Bumgarner $3A (if on SF roster)

With a 280 cap, I would extend Pujols one year to 46. I would pass on writing paper on Ludwick and Johnson because you are going to have much more difficult decisions next year for Escobar and Hanson.

Just a couple thoughts.

One thing to remember, with only 10 teams, the 1 and 2 dollar players will be of better quality this year.....

With a 280 cap, Pujols is well worth 46 bucks....But If I were looking to win this year I might not extend him and use that money to extend Ludwick and Johnson.

I would extend each of those for at least one more year... Ludwick will be well worth the 7 this year and next i feel....

JJ , the same thing...I dont like to extend pitchers out for more than 1 year past the current year unless it is ridiculously cheap on a special player...Lincecum at 1 dollar type stuff....

one last thing. I dont know what type of trader you are, but if you are in the hunt on July 1st, you will need players that have value next season to trade to other dumping owners....if you have a lot of Final year contracts or players that you still need to win, then you miss out on the Dump trades and other owners get the booty.....

Johnson at 11 or Ludwick at 7 will still have value to a dumping owner next season and give you some additional ammo and choices when the time comes to better your team thru dump trades.....

And what would Albert go for on the open market on draft day? How much more than 46 would he cost with the reduced inflation do you think he might cost next season?

Thanks Rotodog. Regarding your question, I would guess that Pujols would go mid 50s in our draft.
